Funding Bill Provides $17 Million for Cleanup of Vieques and $1.4  
Million for Cleanup of Culebra
Legislation also requires Department of Defense to report to Congress  
about pace of cleanup efforts on both islands
Washington, DC - Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi announced  
today that, as part of a comprehensive bill to fund the federal  
government for the remainder of Fiscal Year 2015, Congress is  
appropriating $17 million for the cleanup of Vieques and $1.4 million  
for the cleanup of Culebra.  The report accompanying the bill also  
directs the Department of Defense to take a number of steps to  
improve the cleanup of these two island municipalities, which were  
used as military training ranges for many decades.

Specifically, the final bill will allocate $17 million so that the  
Navy can continue its efforts to clean up Vieques in 2015.  Since  
2003, the Navy has already spent about $220 million to investigate  
and clean lands it contaminated on Vieques.  Currently, the Navy is  
spending more money each year to clean up Vieques than it is spending  
to clean up any other former Navy installation in the United States.   
Since 2007, approximately half of the money budgeted for munitions  
removal on Vieques has been awarded to 23 local companies in Puerto  
Rico.
