Chemical Test Unnerves School

Hanover - A positive test for a potentially carcinogenic compound earlier this week caused a stir at Richmond Middle School, which sits on a parcel that has been contaminated by the chemical.

School officials said they believe the positive test for trichloroethylene, or TCE, was an aberration caused by a cleaning agent, not a known vapor plume that's suspended in the soil, and is not an indication that the air quality in the school has been compromised.

Richmond Middle School is located across Route 10 from the Army's Cold Regions Research and Engineering lab, and prior testing has confirmed that TCE vapor has migrated across the road deep in the soil of the school. TCE was used as a liquid solvent at the lab decades ago, and there were large spills there in the 1970s.
