Blood tests for water contamination needed now Editorial Portsmouth Herald (NH) February 26, 2015It has been 10 months since Portsmouth shut down the Haven well at Pease International Tradeport after testing found levels of perfluorooctane sulfonic acid 10 times higher than the Environmental Protection Agency’s provisional health advisory. PFOS, which the EPA classifies as a “contaminant of emerging concern,” because of its potential harm to humans, is one of a class of chemicals known as PFCs, or perfluorochemicals. It seems unclear exactly how harmful the contaminants can be to humans due to a lack of studies, but the city deemed the threat serious enough to immediately shut down the well and negotiate a deal with the U.S. Air Force to pay for it to find and build a new well. At the same time, state and federal officials have been conducting regular tests of the other city-owned wells at the Pease Tradeport, and the former base’s entire aquifer and nearby wells. Actions thus far show there could be a serious threat to people exposed to contaminant, including 200 children who attend Great Bay Kids Company at the tradeport. ...
