5 visions for unique Presidio landscape going on display

Five distinct visions for the future landscape between the Presidio’s Main Post and Crissy Field are ready for public inspection — but you’ll need cartographic skills to tell one apart from the next.

The quintet ranges in ambition from the basic — coastal scrub and a few trails — to artistic swirling bluffs amid a variety of terrains dotted with small amphitheaters. For now, though, the details are confined to diagrammatic maps and just enough descriptive text to begin the environmental studies required for the 13-acre site being dubbed the “New Presidio Parklands.”

The different approaches were presented Saturday morning at the Presidio in the first of at least five meetings scheduled in the next month to gather public comments and begin moving toward a full design for the unique site, which will be draped across new roadway tunnels.

“There’s a time to come for renderings, but right now we want to be specific” as to exactly how each concept would fit within the current surroundings, said Noreen Hughes, the project manager for the Presidio Trust, the autonomous government agency that manages most of the 1,491-acre park at the base of the Golden Gate Bridge.
