Navy accused of dumping into river By Mike Ford Clay Today (FL) May 21, 2015 GREEN COVE SPRINGS – When ships left the former Lee Field Naval Air Station in the early 1960s, one local historian says Navy personnel were under orders to throw supplies, such as silverware and other items into the St. Johns River. Now, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is looking into contamination at the former military site, but isn’t concerned with such items as forks and spoons. "I talked to 175 men who had served here and they told me that those ships were under orders that when they reached Orange Park, if it wasn’t bolted down, to throw it overboard," Frank Haggard said. The Middleburg resident talked with former sailors while conducting research for written work he crafted for the local historical society in 2008.
