Navy Agrees to Upgrade Red Hill Fuel Storage Tanks In January 2014, the tanks spilled 27,000 gallons of fuel, raising concerns about potential drinking water contamination. By Anita Hofschneider Honolulu CIvil Beat (HI) June 1, 2015 The U.S. military plans to upgrade the Red Hill underground fuel storage tanks over the next 20 years as part of a new agreement with the federal Environmental Protection Agency and the Hawaii Department of Health. The underground storage tanks, which can hold 250 million gallons of fuel, leaked 27,000 gallons in January 2014, raising concerns about potential contamination of Oahu’s water supply. The spill was the latest of dozens of leaks over 70 years. “This agreement will ensure the safety of Oahu’s drinking water supply, while allowing the Red Hill tanks to remain in use as a resource for our national defense,” said Jared Blumenfeld, EPA’s regional administrator for the Pacific Southwest, in a press release issued jointly by the EPA and DOH on Monday. “EPA and the Department of Health will remain vigilant during this long-term effort to protect the public health and Hawaii’s precious aquifers.” … For the entire article, see http://www.civilbeat.com/2015/06/navy-agrees-to-upgrade-red-hill-fuel-storage-tanks/ -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope Street Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650-961-8918 or 650-969-1545 Fax: 650-961-8918 LSiegel@cpeo.org http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
