WWII Ft. Rousseau site due for cleanup
Army Corps of Engineers taking public comment

SITKA - An old landfill site on the Fort Rousseau Causeway is pegged for a major cleanup.

The Army Corps of Engineers is currently taking public comment on a proposed action for the area. As a World War II era military installation, Fort Rousseau qualifies for remediation under the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) program, which cleans up contaminants left over from old military structures.

The proposal for Fort Rousseau involves removing harmful contaminants at five sites on the Causeway, with the landfill being the largest of those, said Quinn Meehan, a geologist for the company AECOM, which is contracting with the Corps of Engineers on the project.

“Basically, this is a removal action where heavy equipment would excavate contaminated material and ship it off-site,” Meehan said.
