Fort Meade: Investigation into contamination source inconclusive, bottled water will continue

John Campbell, 68, grunted in pain Monday as he lifted a 5-gallon water jug — a regular task since 2009 when Fort George G. Meade detected contamination in groundwater where he lives.

The couple lives on Nevada Avenue where residents of about 40 homes with well water have been using bottled water for the last six years. The street is outside the military installation, but Fort Meade is investigating whether its military operations are the source of the contamination.

Last week, Fort Meade officials told families the investigation into the source of the contamination was inconclusive and the residents will continue to receive bottled water. The price tag to date has been $90,000 for the water, Doyle said.

She said recent test results revealed contamination from tetrachloroethylene - a common dry cleaning fluid - had decreased enough for people to drink the well water, but that Fort Meade will continue to provide bottled water as a cautionary measure. Residents hooked up to the county’s water system are not affected.
