Nearing success on Oceana development Editorial Virginian-Pilot August 14, 2015 Ten years ago, a federal base-closing commission threatened to shutter Oceana Naval Air Station unless the state, Virginia Beach and Chesapeake bought and tore down homes, shopping centers and other development around the base. Commissioners worried about the likelihood of a jet crash at Lynnhaven Mall or a neighborhood or school because development had become so dense. Pilots practicing carrier landings found it impossible to simulate nighttime landings at sea because of ambient light.
