Lawmaker: Groundwater contamination could halt Belvoir plan

CHEYENNE - Concerns about groundwater contamination west of the city could jeopardize plans to develop the Belvoir Ranch, a state lawmaker says.

Rep. Jim Byrd, D-Cheyenne, said he is in the early stages of working with a group, Friends of Belvoir Ranch, to put hiking and equestrian trails and other recreational activities on the city-owned property.

But he said the slow process of removing a potentially dangerous chemical from the water beneath the land could hinder the efforts.

"This is an opportunity not to be passed up," he said. "If the groundwater pollution is holding me up - whether by perception or reality - that is a real problem."
