Air Force will not dispute EPA order

PORTSMOUTH - The Air Force announced they will not file a dispute in connection with the Environmental Protection Agency’s order to clean up the aquifer at the former Pease Air Force base and are “pursuing options” to treat all three city-owned wells there.

The announcement is a major change for the Air Force, which had said less than a month ago they were planning to dispute the EPA order and treat only the now closed Haven well, which has been tainted by “contaminants of emerging concern.”

The Air Force filed a “statement of intent” with EPA’s Region 1 administrator after negotiating with the agency’s officials to reach a deal.
