Air Force to pay $750,000 for fuel cleanup delays

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - The Air Force will pay New Mexico $750,000 for failing to meet a December 2014 deadline in the ongoing cleanup of the Kirtland Air Force Base fuel spill.

Payment of the $750,000 was agreed to on Wednesday by the Air Force and the New Mexico Environment Department. It resolves a Notice of Violation filed Jan. 15 because the Air Force missed a deadline for installing and implementing interim measures for cleaning up fuel spill contaminants. Those contaminants pose a threat to drinking water wells in Albuquerque’s Southeast Heights.

“We will not rest until the contamination is completely removed from the groundwater,” said Ryan Flynn, NMED secretary in a news release. “We are very pleased with the last two years’ worth of progress, including, most recently, the treatment of over 16 million gallons of contaminated water since last June.”
