Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] PFCs: Editorial about Fentress Naval Auxiliary Landing Field, VA |
Editorial: When industrial chemicals and human habitation don't mix Editorial Virginian-Pilot February 18, 2016 LAST MONTH, the Navy found elevated levels of contaminants in groundwater at Fentress Naval Auxiliary Landing Field in rural Chesapeake. Officials ordered bottled water delivered to the base and notified the state and the city that the Navy needed to test nearby wells to see whether the contaminants had leached into properties off base. Those tests, on some of the 90 properties within a half-mile of Fentress, were completed last week. While residents, Navy and government officials wait for results — due next month — Chesapeake has set up a free water filling station for those affected. The tests will determine whether perfluorinated compounds, which came from foam used in Navy firefighter training more than 30 years ago, are within acceptable levels and whether testing needs to be expanded beyond the half mile. … For the entire editorial, see http://pilotonline.com/opinion/editorial/editorial-when-industrial-chemicals-and-human-habitation-don-t-mix/article_3a82bd1a-cc20-52ae-a108-4934e5efa1e3.html -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
