Turning ghost ships green: Bay’s rusting warriors are cleaned up By Kevin Fagan San Francisco Chronicle (CA) March 14, 2016 For 70 years, a ghostly fleet of weather-beaten warships and battle freighters has bobbed off the shores of Benicia, waiting for a call to duty that almost never came. They rusted in place, floating museums that nobody got to see of wars that were fought in Korea, Vietnam and the Middle East. When the federal government and environmental groups reached an agreement in 2010 to scrap the ships because they had become what one ecological advocate called “a floating toxic waste dump,” most of the coverage said the fleet could be gone by the end of 2016. Turns out that wasn’t quite true. The dirtiest of the ships could indeed disappear by the end of the year, towed off to scrap metal yards in, most likely, Texas. But those ships, which numbered 57 in 2010, are down to three now — and nine of their cleaner colleagues are bobbing in Suisun Bay right alongside them … For the entire article, see http://www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/article/Turning-ghost-ships-green-Bay-s-rusting-6887787.php?cmpid=gsa-sfgate-result -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
