DOE’s remote site has unusual history By Frank Munger Knoxville News Sentinel (TN) March 18, 2016 OAK RIDGE - Atop Copper Ridge near the southwest border of the U.S. Department of Energy's Oak Ridge reservation lies a remote site that's been used for a series of unusual - and sometimes secret - projects over the past 60 years. Most recently, Oak Ridge National Laboratory used the ridgetop location for a project that's associated with government efforts to prevent the spread of nuclear weapons and special nuclear materials. However, the DOE will not provide details because the "non-proliferation-related" research is classified. … It's not clear if there are plans for other projects at the Tower Shielding Reactor site. Sinclair declined to comment, although she noted that materials stored there must be removed before the site is turned over to the DOE's cleanup team. … For the entire article, see http://www.knoxnews.com/news/local/does-remote-site-has-unusual-history-2e408d48-e054-3005-e053-0100007f92d2-372595421.html -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director, Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center 278-A Hope St., Mountain View, CA 94041 Voice: 650/961-8918 or 650/969-1545 Fax: 650/961-8918 <lsiegel@cpeo.org> http://www.cpeo.org _______________________________________________ Military mailing list Military@lists.cpeo.org http://lists.cpeo.org/listinfo.cgi/military-cpeo.org | |
