Old naval base near Grand Prairie may be repurposed for homeless Tent City exiles

A retired naval base could have new life as the solution to homelessness in Dallas if an ambitious plan by a local businessman comes to fruition.

The proposal calls for establishing a sanctioned campsite for homeless people at Hensley Field, the site of a former naval air station near Grand Prairie. The plan hinges on up to $50 million in private donations to also build tiny homes and other living facilities on the 350-acre lot.

Cedars Neighborhood Association president Michael Sitarzewski sent his 20-page proposal to Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings and City Council members Sunday. He has also started sharing the idea with others in the community to get their feedback, including The Dallas Morning News.
