Unknowns drive toxic water worries near old Michigan Air Force base

OSCODA, MI - Greg and Vicky Cole have something to lose by talking about their water. But they have chosen not to stay quiet.

The Cole's operate a trio of cottages on Van Etten Lake, southeast of the decommissioned Wurtsmith Air Force Base, the source of several toxic fluorocarbon plumes moving through the groundwater in the neighborhood along Van Etten Dam Road and elsewhere in picturesque Oscoda Township, an Up North community on the shores of Lake Huron.

They are concerned about property values because realtors won't even bother listing other homes on their road. They are worried about their business, which relies on the perception of fresh, clean water in order to book downstate vacationers.
