Source of contamination found at Atlas D Missile Site 4 By James Chilton Wyoming Tribune Eagle August 21, 2016 CHEYENNE – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has made a major discovery in its ongoing efforts to diagnose and treat contaminated groundwater at an old nuclear missile launch site west of Cheyenne. For 15 years, the Corps have drilled wells at and around the Atlas D Missile Site 4, located 22 miles west of Cheyenne and south of Interstate 80 on the Belvoir Ranch. The site was home to one of the 1960s-era nuclear launch sites operated by F.E. Warren Air Force Base. High concentrations of trichloroethylene, a chemical used to clean the former missile launcher, have been found around this site and others. Also known as TCE, the chemical has been linked to higher rates of liver damage and cancer, if ingested. ...
