Presidio Building 1648, once top secret, now open for art exhibit By Carl Nolte San Francisco Chronicle (CA) October 8, 2016 Just off a busy street in the Presidio of San Francisco, perched near the edge of a cliff over the Pacific with a tremendous view of the Golden Gate, is a plain cinder block building that once housed the most secret place you never heard of. This is Building 1648, a relic of the Cold War. For years it was the U.S. Army headquarters controlling a dozen Nike missile sites all around the Bay Area to defend the region from attack by Soviet bombers. When the Nikes became obsolete and were removed, Building 1648 was used for a military intelligence project so secret that even the post commander of the Presidio’s Army garrison was not allowed inside. It is one of the rare physical reminders of the Cold War, “that long twilight struggle,” as President Kennedy called it. When the Cold War faded away, the Army furled its flags and marched out of the Presidio and it became part of a national park. That was in 1994 and Building 1648 sat empty and abandoned for 20 years. ...
