Air Force launches $900K effort to treat tainted groundwater in Widefield
The Air Force has commissioned a research project at the Colorado School of Mines aimed at destroying toxic PFCs

WIDEFIELD - While scared residents south of Colorado Springs pay for bottled drinking water, utility crews this week began testing ways to strip toxic chemicals from what flows out of taps - moving ahead rather than waiting for others to fix the problem.

But the Air Force - suspected as a primary source of the groundwater contamination by perfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs - also is looking for a solution. It has launched a $900,000 research project at the Colorado School of Mines aimed at creating an SUV-sized unit to destroy the chemicals. And Air Force crews on Tuesday deployed a drilling rig at the Colorado Springs airport digging for the first samples of soil and groundwater — trying to find where the chemicals are tainting groundwater.
