Chemical warfare agent testing to start next spring by Dave Hinton Rantoul Press (IL) November 22, 2016 RANTOUL — Extensive testing for the presence of chemical warfare agents remaining on the former Chanute Air Force Base is expected to take place next spring. Archives record searches by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers revealed chemical warfare training took place in a 3-acre area northeast of the corner of Century Boulevard and Chandler Road in the south portion of the former base. Paul Carroll, base alignment and closure coordinator for the former base, told members of the Chanute Restoration Advisory Board last week that a contractor has conducted a geophysical survey of the area, but the more meticulous search won’t take place until April. “The geophysical survey was used to identify any areas that might contain metallic debris from the chemical agent shipping containers or any other training activities that were conducted in that area,” Carroll said. ...
