Dr. Andy Martin and Dr. Steven Larson of the U.S. Army Engineer Research and Development Center will discuss two award-winning SERDP and ESTCP projects to improve environmental conditions at active military ranges and installations. First, Dr. Martin will talk about the remediation of metals and munition compounds in soil and surface water runoff from military training areas with a focus on hydrated lime applications to soil surfaces to cost-effectively transform energetics, reduce transport to groundwater and stabilize metals. Second, Dr. Larson will describe a quick, natural and cost-effective solution for soil erosion involving soil amendments with a concentrated biopolymer to effectively promote soil retention, establish vegetation and improve soil health.
