The Delaware Riverkeeper Network, a Bristol Borough-based environmental nonprofit, is petitioning Pennsylvania regulators to set a safe drinking water limit for a toxic chemical called perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), which is currently unregulated.

In a formal petition delivered to the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection, the Riverkeepers ask the state to set a limit of 1 to 6 parts per trillion (ppt), which is well below a 70 ppt health advisory limit set by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

PFOA, along with sister chemicals that include perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), have been found in high amounts in Bucks and Montgomery County drinking water supplies. In the past several years, more than 20 public and 200 private drinking water wells in the two counties have been closed due to contamination. Much of the contamination is believed to have originated in firefighting foams used at area military bases for decades, and exposure may have reached as many as 70,000 current residents and uncounted past residents and base personnel.
