New Outer Banks island evacuated after unexploded ordnance found on sand By Jeff Hampton Virginian-Pilot July 14, 2017 BUXTON, N.C.- Authorities evacuated the new island off Cape Point on Friday morning after a possible unidentified military object was found lying on the sand. The dark, encrusted piece looks like it could be unexploded military ordnance, said Dorothy Hester, Dare County spokeswoman. A person on the island reported the object to Hatteras Island Rescue Squad early Friday morning.
