Air Force outlines options for tainted Moose Creek wells

FAIRBANKS - A public comment period ends Monday for the Air Force’s study on how to get clean water to Moose Creek residents with tainted wells. 

The Air Force is weighing seven options, including piping water from Eielson Air Force Base, piping water from North Pole and installing water tanks to continue delivering water by truck. The options range in cost from $32 million to $67 million, numbers that include the initial cost and costs during the next 30 years.  

Since 2015, the Air Force has been paying for the delivery of bottled water or for the installation of granular-activated carbon filters at Moose Creek homes with contaminated wells. That year, wells in the area were found to be contaminated by toxic perflorinated compounds, chemicals previously used in firefighting foams at Eielson Air Force Base.
