Seoul samples soil near US military sites By Kim Se-jeong Korea Times August 10, 2017 The results are expected to come out next month. The testing will be conducted by researchers at the city’s Research Institute of Public Health and Environment to determine if the soil and water samples are contaminated with benzene, toluene or ethylbenzene, among others. Benzene and toluene are believed to cause cancer. Depending on the results, the city will request a joint study with the U.S. Forces Korea (USFK), which is currently relocating its compound to Pyeongtaek, south of Seoul. For the last decade, the city has spent 6.2 billion won ($5.44 million) to clean up two military facilities returned to the city ― Yongsan Garrison’s South Post and Camp Kim.
