Private well near Guard base contaminated By Mike Polhamus VT Digger (VT) September 19 2017 Atype of chemical called polyfluorinated compounds has been found in a private well at a farm near the Vermont Air National Guard base in South Burlington. This class of chemical includes perfluorooctanoic acid, or PFOA, a carcinogen and toxicant with which Bennington manufacturer Chemfab was found to have poisoned hundreds of area wells. This type of chemical is common in certain types of manufacturing, but it’s also found in firefighting foams, due to its exceptional resistance to thermal breakdown. The National Guard is a branch of the U.S. Air Force, which — like many agencies across the country that fight fires — began decades ago to use firefighting foam that contains PFCs. … For the entire article, see https://vtdigger.org/2017/09/19/private-well-near-guard-base-contaminated/#.Wcdp0UzMyb8 -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight a project of the Pacific Studies Center P.O.
