Pentagon Watchdog Probes Efforts to Address ‘Forever Chemicals’ By Andrea Vittorio Bloomberg Environmental February 4, 2020 A military watchdog is opening a probe this month into the Defense Department’s efforts to identify, mitigate, and clean up contamination from so-called forever chemicals. The Pentagon’s inspector general will also look at how the department has informed people exposed to per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) of health and safety concerns associated with them, according to a Feb. 3 memo. The Defense Department faces potentially widespread pollution at and near military bases, much of it from the regular use of firefighting foam that contains the man-made chemicals.
