Former Fort Ritchie Army base sold to Cascade man decades after closure

Cascade resident John W. Krumpotich finally settled his $1.85 million purchase of nearly 500 acres at the former Fort Ritchie military base on Wednesday.

The closing came a year and a day after it was originally scheduled, because of repeated court appeals from a Sabillasville, Md., businessman.

"I'm just so excited to get started. ... And so thankful for all the support we've received from the community and the county," Krumpotich said Thursday.

In February, the Maryland Court of Special Appeals affirmed a decision by a Washington County Circuit Court judge to dismiss Craig Mahrle's lawsuit challenging the county's sale of the property.
