Alameda Point housing development moving ahead despite challenges U.S. Navy to charge builders $100,000 per market-rate home after first 1,282 units constructed on former base By RALPH JENNINGS East Bay Times (CA) April 19, 2022 As California tries to ease its housing shortage, the state has assigned Alameda to find sites for 5,353 new homes, in line with similar-sized cities around the Bay Area. Of the state’s total for Alameda, 2,239 units are supposed to be what the Association of Bay Area Governments calls “low-income” or “very-low-income.” Housing already crisscrosses Alameda from the San Leandro to San Francisco bays. To meet its target, the city is studying whether developers could add apartment-style units on top of buildings along its two main-street commercial districts or use space in its larger shopping malls. The island city doesn’t have much space.
