More empty promises at the ‘Great’ Park

If you wonder why this Editorial Board is skeptical of government “solutions,” then look at the sordid history of Orange County’s Great Park. It has been in the planning stages for nearly two decades and isn’t much closer to completion than when planning started. In the 1990s, we dubbed it the Great Pork – a not-so-subtle reference to wasteful spending.

Recently, the Irvine City Council approved another new Great Park master plan (which it prefers to call a framework). It includes plans for an amphitheater, botanical gardens, museums, library and lakes, but sounds like more of the same empty promises OC residents have heard for years.

As VoiceofOC reported, “the city’s failure to follow through on the project’s last two master plans has left some questioning if what’s on paper now will ultimately be what goes into the park.” Well, who isn’t questioning those plans? The saga over the Marine Corps Air Station-El Toro’s 4,700 acres began in 1993 when the base closure committee decided to shutter it in 1999.
