Contaminated soil at Mobile public park being cleaned up by Andrea Ramey WPMI T-15 News (Mobile, AL) September 7, 2022 MOBILE, Ala. — Workers are in the process of removing contaminated soil in a section of Doyle Park that once was part of the Brookley Air Force Base. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says a burn pit on the base caused trichloroethylene, a chemical linked to some cancers, to get into the ground water. "This particular one back in World War II was a refuse oil burn pit. They would do a number of things there, but a lot of times, if they had refused oil, they would put it in a pit and incinerate it to get rid of it," said Carl Dokter, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Formerly Used Defense Sites (FUDS) Program Manager. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is tasked with investigating and remediating contamination on old military sites. Dokter says contractors will excavate the soil, replace it with clean soil, and inject material into the ground that will help bacteria consume the contamination. … For the entire article, see https://mynbc15.com/news/local/contaminated-soil-at-mobile-public-park-being-cleaned-up -- Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
