Third report finds no harmful radiation at shuttered Jana Elementary in Florissant From the Coldwater Creek's long history of radioactive contamination: Highlights of recent Post-Dispatch coverage series By Blythe Bernhard St. Louis Post-Dispatch November 16, 2022 FLORISSANT — Three weeks after closing Jana Elementary for possible radiological contamination, Hazelwood School Board members said the risk to students, teachers and alumni remains unclear. The board heard results Tuesday from a third round of testing they ordered at the shuttered school in Florissant, following two conflicting reports on the presence of radioactive contamination in the school and on the playground. The school, which opened in 1970 at 405 Jana Drive, sits in the flood plain of Coldwater Creek. The creek was contaminated with radioactive waste generated by Mallinckrodt Chemical, which processed uranium in the 1940s and ’50s for the nation’s atomic weapons program.
