Proposed Corrective Action Plan for Former Makah Air Force Station in Washington U.S. EPA Region 10 December 13, 2022 EPA is soliciting public comments on a proposed Corrective Action Plan to clean up petroleum contaminated soil and groundwater associated with releases from underground storage tanks located at the former Makah Air Force Station on the Makah Indian Reservation in Neah Bay, Washington. The proposed cleanup action involves excavation and off-site disposal of contaminated soils. Oxygen-releasing compounds will be applied to the excavation prior to backfilling to further treat petroleum contamination in soil and groundwater. Also, the fill used to backfill the excavation will also be amended with oxygen-releasing compounds to provide additional treatment. Groundwater and residual soil that cannot be excavated will be treated by injecting an oxygen-releasing compounds slurry. This treatment technology is referred to as in situ (or "in place") chemical oxidation and bioremediation. Monitoring would occur to determine if chemical concentrations are below cleanup standards. … For the entire public notice and links to supporting documents, see https://www.epa.gov/publicnotices/proposed-corrective-action-plan-former-makah-air-force-station-washington — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
