EPA dips a toe back into Air Force’s Wurtsmith pollution cleanup

OSCODA, MI — Eight years after it stepped away, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is re-entering the pollution cleanup picture at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base.

In November, EPA held the first in a new series of quarterly meetings with the Air Force and Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy (EGLE), which the agency says are meant to offer support on “legal, technical or community involvement issues.”

EPA says the voluntary meetings follow repeated requests from community members and Congressional officials for it to take a more active role in the toxic PFAS cleanup.
