Lincoln's defunct missile site contamination has spread

A 46-acre white elephant in Lincoln that no one is publicly talking about needs to be addressed by Lincoln, county, regional and federal officials.

The elephant is the defunct, contaminated Lincoln Titan 1 Missile Silo Complex that operated from 1962 to 1965.

The former missile site at 401 Oak Tree Lane, one-and-a-half miles east of downtown Lincoln, is contaminated with trichloroethylene or TCE, benzene, lead and xylenes. TCE is a degreasing solvent.

It was never cleaned up and subsequently, a TCE plume moved from the missile site to under the Saint Joseph Catholic Church property and adjacent properties owned by Ferrari and Drummond on the other side of the street, according to a Dec. 9, 2008 county memorandum.
