U.S. Army provides update on cleanup efforts at site of Panasonic plant in Kansas Community members press for answers about contamination of soil and groundwater at former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant By ERIN SOCHA Kansas Reflector JUNE 15, 2023 DE SOTO — The U.S. Army has finished phase two of its three-phased remediation work at the former Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant, an official said Wednesday. The 9,065-acre site has been the focus of efforts to clean up soil and water contamination that had accumulated over the 50-year life of the facility, which had been used to make explosive materials. Japanese company Panasonic is constructing a massive electric vehicle battery manufacturing plant at this location. “This is a very big undertaking,” said Ian Thomas, the Sunflower project manager with the U.S. Department of Defense’s Base Realignment and Closure program. The Sunflower Army Ammunition Plant was built during World War II and became the largest ammunition plant in the world, producing smokeless gunpowder and propellant. The plant was decommissioned after the war but resumed operations during conflicts in Korea and Vietnam. It continued producing explosives throughout the 1980s and was decommissioned again in 1992, before closing in 1997. … For the entire article, see https://kansasreflector.com/2023/06/15/u-s-army-provides-update-on-cleanup-efforts-at-site-of-panasonic-plant-in-kansas/ — Lenny Siegel Executive Director Center for Public Environmental Oversight A project of the Pacific Studies Center LSiegel@cpeo.org P.O.
