Air Force to boost Wurtsmith PFAS cleanup under national directive By Garret Ellison MLive..com August 17, 2023 OSCODA, MI - The U.S. Air Force will step up its PFAS pollution cleanup at the former Wurtsmith Air Force Base under a new defense policy directive which instructs military branches to prioritize stopgap measures when possible. On July 11, the U.S. Department of Defense directed the Army, Navy, Air Force and National Guard to search out places at current and former bases where interim actions can remove PFAS from groundwater and soil before a final full-scale cleanup plan is developed. Such interim remedial actions (IRAs) have previously been deployed at some installations with PFAS contamination, most notably at Wurtsmith, on a case-by-case basis. ...
