Chanute transfer from Air Force to Rantoul becomes official today By DAVE HINTON News-Gazette (IL) October 25, 2023 RANTOUL — While the official closure of Chanute as an Air Force base took place 30 years ago last month and the final property transfer was completed last month, today’s the day the handover from the military to the village will be complete. That said, the environmental cleanup of the site is still a long way from completion. Paul Carroll, a program manager for the Air Force Base Realignment and Closure program, said the Air Force is still actively remediating and investigating potential contamination associated with the firefighting foam once used on base.
