Subject: [CPEO-MEF] PFAS: Defense Department report on mission-critical PFAS uses

Report on Critical Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substance Uses
Pursuant to Section 347 of the James M. Inhofe National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2023 (Public Law 117-263)

"This report provides details on what is currently known about direct and indirect mission critical PFAS uses that could impact mission readiness if the substances are no longer available. It also highlights the challenges and costs related to finding and qualifying equal or improved performing alternatives to existing PFAS materials in sectors of strategic importance to DoD. It is important to note that the information contained in this report is limited to what was available at the time of its drafting. As such, the information presented represents a fraction of the mission critical PFAS uses due to a lack of knowledge of the complete chemical composition in consumables and articles (e.g., end items). In addition, there is significant uncertainty regarding the presence of PFAS in products that make up a complex value chain. A more complete understanding of PFAS essential uses would require an extensive and complex evaluation of the market, a gap analysis of current requirements for manufacturer-provided product information, and illumination of the value chain of products."
