Former skeet shooting range on Joint Base Cape Cod eyed for cleanup. Public comment sought

A virtual public meeting to discuss the cleanup of an out-of-use practice shotgun range will be hosted Wednesday evening by the Air Force Civil Engineering Centeron Joint Base Cape Cod, covering the range’s environmental impact and potential cleanup solutions. 

The Air Force Civil Engineering Center said a remedial investigation did not identify “unacceptable risks” to the area’s groundwater from lead munitions but is proposing excavating the site’s contaminated soil and disposing it offsite. 

Douglas Karson, Air Force Civil Engineering Center Community Involvement Lead, said the site’s cleanup is part of the much larger Military Munitions Response Program — an initiative involving many sites identified by the military as requiring cleanup.
