Court rules Navy liable for Red Hill fuel leak

HONOLULU - On Wednesday a federal judge ruled the U.S. government liable for the 2021 Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility leak on Oahu, which contaminated Pearl Harbor’s drinking water and put the health of thousands of residents at risk.

In her conclusion, U.S. District Judge Leslie Kobayashi awarded $682,000 to the 17 bellwether plaintiffs ranging $5,000 for children under 2 years to $75,000 for teenaged plaintiffs. Four of the plaintiffs will receive additional compensation for future medical expenses, totaling approximately $48,000.

“It is clear to the court that many of the plaintiffs have suffered greatly and have a myriad of health issues,” Kobayashi said in the 162-page preliminary findings order.
