Waterfront plans to take shape in ’08
Environmental impact statement due this month

BELLINGHAM - A year ago at this time, city and Port of Bellingham
officials were expressing the hope that a master plan for redevelopment
of 220 waterfront acres could be complete by the end of 2007.
But like most things surrounding the complex project, the master
planning process is taking longer than expected. Port Executive Director
Jim Darling now says he expects to have a plan ready for City Council
and Port Commission approval by this summer.
The first step toward that goal will be a draft environmental impact
statement to be issued this month.
That document will outline various waterfront development scenarios and
provide the information necessary for the master plan. Issuance of the
draft will set off a public comment period, leading to a final
environmental document by spring that will set the stage for master
planning.
