[Brownfields-CPEO] Gowanus area investigation update, Brooklyn, New Yurksd

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation has just issued a seven-page Community Update for the Gowanus Canal Area in Brooklyn. See https://extapps.dec.ny.gov/data/der/factsheet/gowanusupdate0926.pdf . DEC and NYSDOH [Department of Health] are working with partners from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to undertake the comprehensive investigation and cleanup of former industrial sites near the Gowanus Canal. The update describes the area-wide vapor intrusion investigation, which offers vapor intrusion mitigation to buildings where indoor air contamination exceeds state standards for toxic volatile organic compounds such as trichloroethylene (TCE). The document also provides brief updates about eight properties undergoing site-specific responses.

As I’ve said before, the area-wide investigation is a positive step. However, thorough groundwater cleanup would be much more likely if groundwater sampling results from all the cleanup projects in the area were used to create a common plume map..
