LOCAL COMMUNITY GROUP RECOGNIZED FOR INVOLVEMENT IN CLEANUP

A community group, Tri-Valley Communities Against a Radioactive Environment
(Tri-Valley CARES), will be recognized by EPA for their efforts at the
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory Main Site and Site 300, National
Priorities List Superfund sites. Twenty people from Tri-CARE will receive
the Hazardous Waste Citizen Award at the Superfund Community Involvement
Program meeting for their outstanding achievements in the Superfund cleanup
process. This is the first year EPA has given this award. Tri-Valley CARES
members have helped to identify community concerns about plutonium
contamination and to help ensure that it did not pose risks to human health
and the environment. Members of the organization have been active in all
public meetings held by the Department of Energy, EPA and Agency for Toxic
Substances Disease Registry. The group has also published information about
the sites in their monthly newsletter and on their web page to provide the
community with up-to-date information. The ceremony will be held at 10:30
a.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 29, at the Holiday Inn, Financial District, in the
Chinese Cultural Center room. Information about this site is found at
