Feb. 5, 2001 | HONG KONG (AP) -- Undersea dredging to reclaim land for a
Disney theme park has turned up dozens of old bombs and artillery shells, but
authorities said Monday the explosives pose no threat even if they end up under
landfill being built for the park.
World War II-era bombs are found from time to time in Hong Kong, but
this batch of explosives is larger than normal and keeping disposal crews
busier than usual.
"It's because they've been digging in a dumping ground" used by the
British military for decades, said Alick McWhirter, an assistant bomb disposal
officer.
Two uncovered over the weekend, he said, brings the total found to 45
bombs and unexploded shells since workers began dredging mud in October from
south of Hong Kong island, to be used for reclaiming an area where Disneyland
will open its park in 2005.
