| Subject: | [CPEO-MEF] Army explains tungsten difference |
Green bullets contain no tungsten alloys
Letter to the Editor
Cape Cod Times (MA)
March 2, 2005
Your Feb. 23 article "Green munitions linked to cancer" highlighted an
inaccurate link
between tungsten alloy toxicity and the Army's lead-free bullet.
The Army would like to clearly state that tungsten alloys are not the
form of tungsten
used in the Army's lead-free bullet ("green bullet"). Further, tungsten
alloys have not been
used in bullets at the Massachusetts Military Reservation.
The lead-free bullet is composed of tungsten composite, specifically
tungsten and nylon.
These two substances are pressed together to form a bullet similar in
weight and
performance to traditional lead rounds.
