Navy finishes $129.8 million cleanup after fire in 2023 destroyed WWII blimp hangar in Southern California By GARY WARNER STARS AND STRIPES September 24, 2025 The Navy has spent $129.8 million on the cleanup of the former World War II blimp hangar at the shuttered Marine Corps Air Station Tustin, destroyed almost two years ago by fire, the Pentagon said this week. Workers for the Navy have hauled away more than 549 tons of twisted and charred metal from the wreckage, along with just under 77 tons of toxic waste, from the site in Southern California. Another 3,214 tons of nontoxic debris from the charred wreck of the North Hangar, according to a tally by the Naval Facilities Engineering Systems Command.
