As Charleston's former Naval Base overhaul continues, Myrtle Beach could offer glimpse of its future By Kenna Coe Charleston Post & Courier (SC) October 8, 2025 NORTH CHARLESTON — On a drive over the new Cosgrove Avenue extension bridge,several large cranes appear along the horizon, signaling the industrial footprint that now defines the former Charleston Naval Base. Located along the Cooper River, the prime waterfront property wasn’t accessible to the public for nearly a century while the base was open, said Sean McDonell, executive director of the Charleston Naval Complex Redevelopment Authority, the group tasked with overseeing the development of the former base. “You have longtime residents of North Charleston that had never been on the base and didn't realize how pretty this area is,” he said.Since the base closed in 1996, the 1,575-acre property has attracted a number of manufacturing businesses and federal agencies on its southern end, but initial plans to transform the northern side into a booming commercial and residential district were slow to gain traction.
