Air Force Base Restoration Team Provides Updates on Remediation Efforts

The team working on environmental restoration efforts at the former Naval Weapons Industrial Reserve Plant (NWIRP) Bedford, east of The Edge Sports Center on Hartwell Road, are continuing to address per- and polyfluoroalkyl (PFAS) and other forms of contamination, with upcoming inspections and studies, reports, and potential remedies and recommendations on the horizon.

The Hanscom Air Force Base Restoration Advisory Board, which consists of representatives from the Air Force, Army Corps of Engineers, Environmental Protection Agency, Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection, and Seres-Arcadis Joint Venture, provided updates on previous and upcoming activities to a virtual audience on Tuesday, Jan. 27.

The team holds an annual meeting to communicate about the work being done at the NWIRP Bedford site. The board’s 2025 meeting was originally scheduled for October, but had to be pushed to January due to the government shutdown.

Andy Vitolins, program manager for environmental engineering consulting firm Seres-Arcadis Joint Venture, detailed the work that has been done recently and the work that is ongoing at each remediation site of the former NWIRP Bedford.
